History of Penny's Pals

My love of all animals large and small has been a part of me since early childhood. I remember telling my "boyfriend" (in the sixth grade) I didn't have time for a boyfriend, I had chickens and my grandpa built me a chicken coop. You have to have your priorities. Over the years, I have always wished to live on a farm/ranch. Now, retired, with my husband and best friend, Phil, our dreams have come true living just outside of a small town, Plymouth, Calif. for the past fifteen years. Many farm animals have lived here on our farm, from chickens to cows and horses to now Olde English Southdown Babydoll Sheep. Falling in love with the tiny sheep is the easy part, the gentle nature of Babydolls make them excellent companions for all ages. Their small size makes them easy to manage and are invaluable to Vintners for managing weeds under vines.

Besides the adorable Southdown Babydoll Sheep we have beautiful Huacaya and Suri Alpacas. We started our herd with three Huacayas Alpacas and now have added seven Suri Alpacas. Their inquisitive nature make them a real traffic stopper when folks drive by. Just by yelling out "llamas llama" (it is too hard to say alpacas several time) the alpacas come running with Lyndy, usually first, and everyone else jockeying for position to catch up. Lagging back is Gulliver, Cabernet and last taking her time is Champagne, one of my original Alpacas who is 21 years old. Every day is fun here on the farm, my husband loves to round up the animals with his quad, honking the horn along the way

With all this fiber from the sheep and alpacas I enjoy spinning their fleece into yarn. Though I have tried my hand at knitting and weaving, I am not very good at it. So I just spin the yarn for others to make beautiful items from it.

So, in case you are wondering what other critters live at Penwinkle Farms here is the list: In our extra large chicken coop live Black Copper Maran chickens and misc. Bantams; Runner Ducks, Sebastopol Geese, Peacocks, and Honey-Bunny the Rabbit. Up by our house is an aviary of Ringneck Doves and a Koi pond. picture of black cat To round out the group we have Rogue the Bernese Mountain Dog, Frankie the mini Aussie, Missy the Border Collie Mix and the king of our place, Rambo the cat. Visiting in springtime is especially fun, an array of babies to see and cuddle, eggs to collect and whatever new additions we have. Please feel free to contact us for a farm visit.
